Fox 2000 is reportedly organizing a sequel to "Mrs. Doubtfire" and a new generation may soon discover the comedy of the popular ’90s movie.

While not clear yet who will star in “Mrs. Doubtfire 2,” The Hollywood Reporter said Robin Williams, who made the original role laugh-out-loud funny, is attached to the film, as is director Chris Columbus and “Elf” writer David Berenbaum, who was tapped to write the script.

Williams snagged a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy for playing a divorced dad who dressed up as Mrs. Doubtfire to become the nanny for his children in an effort to spend more time with them. The ex-wife was played by Sally Fields. The 1993 movie won a Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy.

“Mrs. Doubtfire” pulled in $219 million in the U.S. and $222 million globally. A sequel was tried in 2001, THR said, but didn’t come through when Williams and Columbus weren’t drawn to the script.

One of the actresses who played Williams’ child in the comedy, Mara Wilson, took to Twitter to say she wouldn’t be involved with the sequel.

Her response got a lot of online attention, and Wilson ended up tweeting more, explaining that she had not been asked to be in the movie and the only reason she tweeted anything was to answer the “literal hundreds” of people asking her about it.

The idea that Mrs. Doubtfire could grace the silver screen once more was greeted with varying degrees of excitement online.
